At Innovation Fund Sitra and to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland, Tapani Piha worked in the European Commission 2001-2018. As Head of Unit, he was responsible i.a. for digital transformation in health, the European Reference Networks for rare diseases, Directive on cross-border healthcare, and developing policy on Health Technology Assessment.
Since 2019 in Finland, he has advised the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and Sitra on digital health, use of health data and the EU health policy. In the TEHDAS Joint Action he leads the work on the sustainability planning for the European Health Data Space. A medical specialist in public health by training, he served the Finnish government 1995-2001. At the WHO Regional Office for Europe he was Regional Adviser for a Tobacco-Free Europe.
