UpToDate ExpertAI – From Trusted Evidence to Local Practice: Building Clinical AI for the Nordic Context
v/Nico Meißner-Bendzko, Lead Technology Manager – Wolters Kluwer UpToDate
Generative AI is transforming how clinicians access information, but fluency alone does not make an answer clinically trustworthy or locally applicable. Healthcare professionals need to understand where an answer comes from, how it has been evaluated, and whether it reflects the guidance and practice of the healthcare system in which they work.
This session will introduce UpToDate Expert AI and demonstrate how clinicians can use natural-language questions to access concise answers grounded in UpToDate’s expert-authored clinical content. It will show how source transparency, clinical experts in the
loop, structured clinical evaluation, and ongoing monitoring distinguish a governed clinical AI system from a general-purpose language model.
The session will then explore the next challenge for international clinical AI: localization. Allowing clinicians to communicate in their preferred language improves access, but translation alone does not make an answer locally applicable. Clinical AI must
also account for relevant national guidance while maintaining source transparency and making meaningful source differences visible.
An ongoing proof-of-concept project in Norway will illustrate how selected Norwegian national guidelines can be surfaced alongside UpToDate guidance. The presentation will share the principles behind this approach and the questions that must be addressed before
locally relevant clinical AI can scale across different countries and healthcare systems.
