Together with Enterprise Estonia and the Estonian Embassy in Oslo is EHiN organising a trip to Tallinn to understand more of the digitalization processes in Estonia.

Estonia is widely recognized as a global leader in digital innovation, particularly in the field of eHealth. The country has implemented a comprehensive digital health system that integrates various healthcare services and patient data into a unified platform. Here are some key aspects of Estonia’s eHealth system.

  1. Electronic Health Record (EHR) System: Estonia has a nationwide EHR system called the Estonian Health Information System (EHIS). This system allows healthcare providers to access patient records electronically, ensuring that patient information is up-to-date and easily accessible across different healthcare facilities.
  2. e-Prescriptions: Estonia has fully digitalized its prescription system.
  3. Patient Portal: The Patient Portal (Digilugu) allows Estonian citizens to access their own health records, view test results, and see their medical history.
  4. Digital ID and Security: Estonia’s eHealth system is built on the foundation of its robust digital ID infrastructure.
  5. Telemedicine: Estonia has embraced telemedicine, allowing patients to consult with healthcare providers remotely.
  6. Data Exchange: The X-Road platform is a key component of Estonia’s digital infrastructure, enabling secure data exchange between different healthcare providers and institutions. This ensures that patient data is shared efficiently and securely across the healthcare system.
  7. Health Statistics and Research: The centralized health data system also supports public health monitoring and research. Aggregated data can be used for epidemiological studies, health policy planning, and other research purposes, while maintaining individual privacy.
  8. Interoperability: Estonia’s eHealth system is designed to be interoperable with other digital services and systems, both within the country and internationally. This facilitates cross-border healthcare and data exchange within the European Union.
  9. Government Support: The Estonian government has been a strong proponent of digital transformation in healthcare, providing the necessary legal framework, funding, and support to ensure the successful implementation and continuous improvement of the eHealth system.
